What is your self-therapy of choice? What do you do to revive, rejuvenate, and renew?
I think there is a unique distinction between self-care and self-therapy. Therapy in psychology is defined as “the process of meeting with a therapist to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or sensations in the body.” When I speak of self-therapy, I refer to how do you meet with “yourself” as your own therapist? This experience is vital to getting life back on track, to allow space to feel clarity for what is next and/or to celebrate the goodness of your present moment.
I meet myself in the kitchen for my self-therapy. Connecting with cooking allows me the space to evaluate life and feel peace. Yes, cooking creates food and nutrition for self-care; however, it’s deeper than that for me. It truly allows me to check in with myself and deeply focus on nothing else. When we create and make the time for doing something we genuinely love, a calm is felt. When calm is present, the rest can fall in place. Doing what I love requires me to stop all the busyness of life, to slow down and live in the present moment. When life is the most challenging, making time for self-therapy is all the more vital to my well-being.
If you know me at all, you would likely have expected me to say my self-therapy is yoga. That is my self-care. I like to think of self-care as a way to build resilience in life. Self-care is important for sure, and comes in forms of exercise and movement, nutrition, sleep, relationships, and spirituality to name a few. Self-therapy, in my opinion, is the deepest form of self-help and food for your soul. Where do you meet with yourself to feel your peace and calm to fuel revival, rejuvenation, and renewal in your life?
I humbly share my blog of recipes: www.kitchenkarmakooks.blogspot.com that I started during an overwhelmingly challenging time in my life in 2012 when self-therapy was imperative. It continues to be my modality of sharing with friends and loved ones how to create what makes my soul sing. I happily share this with you and encourage you to find and/or make time for your self-therapy.
