When a fork in the road of life happens, a decision must be made on which path appears best to take. Often our first reaction is, “why now?”, when a fork does rear its opportunistic head.
I recently had that “why now” moment and have been toggling back and forth on which direction to go. When life gets into a groove and we get comfortable, these forks in the road can be unsettling and downright tiring mentally and emotionally. I am trying my best to see this fork as an opportunity rather than a burden or pain. Maybe it was time for a change and I just did not see the writing on the wall?
Regardless of why this fork has come about, decisions can be difficult to make even though they can come with positivity. It is tough to discern opportunity from risk. What results are subjective and which are measurable? I do believe in following my intuition after solidly doing my research and due diligence. That gut feeling has 99.9% served me well in life when I mindfully pay attention to it while going through the process.
When faced with your next “why now” or fork in the road, consider the following wise guidelines:
- Consider your “head choice” versus “heart choice”
- What makes sense on paper?
- What makes your soul sing?
- Which direction seems reasonable and realistic with the situation at hand?
- Look beyond now
- Do your due diligence in evaluating all options and how each aligns with your goals
- Give yourself time and space to think about how this will affect your future based on your life experiences
- Is your decision written in stone after it is made?
- Is there a way out if you later need to adjust?
- What is the cost of failure and not just financial, but emotional, mentally and spiritually?
- Could you survive if you had to modify your decision in the future?
- Go with it!
- After collection of facts and listening to your gut, act!
- There is no such thing as failure, rather moments of learning, growth and strength.
I am so grateful that I have the choice as to how I will struggle with making life changing decisions. So yes, decisions and forks in the road can disrupt our routine and comfort in life, but it does not have to be grueling. Going through the process can be exciting and empowering if you allow it to be. Change can be exciting and transform your life!
When you come to the fork in the road, take it! ~Yogi Berra
